Facilities
Eclectic is probably the best word to describe the Sanctuary. Medieval Europe,
Appalachia, ancient Japan, South Pacific, Scandinavia, Tropical Rain Forest,
Colonial America; there are elements of all of these represented in the various
facilities and gardens at the Sanctuary. But one common theme runs throughout:
Everything is designed to provide you with a setting of serenity and simplicity
that supports your need for "time out" from your busy schedule and a place to
reconnect with Nature and your own deepest Self.

Elfhaven
Elfhaven lodge is the central activity center of the Sanctuary. From the outside
it looks like a rustic Appalachian cabin, complete with a wrap around porch,
rocking chairs and lots of flowers and a large sun deck overlooking our
vegetable garden. Stepping inside, the ceiling beams and posts, colonial
furniture and decor, wood stove - and no TV - make you wonder if you have
stepped back in time. But there are anomalies. For example, one whole wall of
the living room is covered with a floor to ceiling world map. In spite of our
seclusion, we have visitors from around the globe and our map reminds us that
ultimately, we are citizens of the world. And yes, we do have a modern kitchen,
toilet and shower. Our water is gravity fed into the house from a spring on the
hill so you can drink fresh spring water directly from the tap.

Hermitage
The Hermitage, located beside the river, was designed both for individual
retreats as well as supplemental lodging for small groups. The first floor of
the hermitage features a built-in medieval style bed with a closet, a table and
a rocker, with French doors opening onto a small stone paved patio. The covered
porch on two sides of the hermitage overlooks the river. The second level is a
small carpeted loft with a double bed. The Hermitage has electricity and a small
mini-kitchen on the porch with a hotplate, coffee maker and refrigerator. Toilet
and larger kitchen facilities are available at the main lodge.

Balihouse
Balihouse is a small open sided pavilion, also perched above the river. With
its bamboo screen walls, dark polished floors and sleeping loft, you have the
impression of having just stepped into a Balinese country cottage. The ever
present sound of the river cascading over the rocks make this a favorite place
both for small gatherings as well as lodging.

The Hobbithut
A comfortable double bed with a roof on it; that's the simple description. But
one look at the photo and you realize that it's much, much more than this. Our
Hobbithut is situated at the foot of an ancient fir tree whose lower branches
enfold it gracefully. It offers a panoramic view of the whole Sanctuary and is
by far the best spot for watching the sunset. With the morning mists drifting
across the mountains in the background, It is easy to
imagine this as a way station for traveling hobbits.

Sauna
A half-hidden boardwalk from the Gnomelodge or the inconspicuous trail beyond
the apple trees will take you to a little bit of Scandinavia. The little cottage
you find hidden behind the rhododendron is actually a saunahouse, complete with
a tiny wood stove, seats for seven and a big tub of icy spring water outside to
cool you down after a steaming sauna.
